Biographical Information

Jim grew up in Central Wisconsin and graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh, with a degree in Economics in January 1984.  After moving to Central Florida in 1984, he attended and graduated from Florida State University College of Law in 1988.

Jim began his legal career in 1988 as an Assistant Public Defender in Seminole and then Brevard County.  He then joined a Brevard County Criminal Defense firm in Merritt Island, Florida.  In 2005, he opened his own firm, James G. Kontos, P.A.

Jim is a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers; Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers; Florida Bar; and Brevard County Bar Association.  He is admitted to practice in Florida and the Federal Middle District of Florida.  He is member of the National Trial Lawyers Top 100 – Criminal Defense; chaired the 18th Judicial District Grievance Committee in 2011; and was awarded the Brevard County Bar Association Private Attorney Professionalism Award in 2007.

Jim exclusively practices criminal defense in state and federal courts, and has handled criminal cases throughout the state of Florida and in Virginia and Louisiana.   He has argued appeals in the 5th District Court of Appeals and the Florida Supreme Court.
